As a reading teacher, summer reading loss is probably one of the most concerning aspects of literacy education today. According to Allington & McGill-Franzen (2003), summer reading loss refers to "the decline in children's reading development that can occur during summer vacation times when children are away from the classroom and not participating in formal literacy programs." One recent study showed that the decoding skills of nearly 45% of participants and the fluency skills of 25% declined between May and September (Mraz & Rasinski, 2007, p. 784-785). Another study showed that children who do not read over the summer can fall behind up to two grade levels; experts know that reading SIX books during the summer is all children need to do in order to maintain the reading level and skills they gained during the school year. As parents and educators, it is our responsibility to help our children retain the high levels of achievement they reached this school year while they are enjoying their time off.

Below are several resources which will help you better understand summer reading loss and ways you can help your child. As more information becomes available, I will continue to update this site through the end of the summer. If you have questions at any time, please let me know.
