Each day we will read and work as a whole group, in small groups, and independently.

We are very excited about the Writing Fundamentals program. Throughout the year, students will focus on 5 major units to develop the writing process and grammar skills!

  • How Writers Work (narrative)
  • Nonfiction (expository)

  • Feature Article (persuasive)
  • Multi-Genre (narrative, expository, and persuasive)

Students will also engage in a variety of other writing assignments including poetry and cross-curricular lab reports, research reports, and summaries. We will also use the Write Source textbook to practice grammar skills.

4th Grade Writing Skills:

  • Ideas:create pieces of work which are focused, organized, and elaborated
  • Organization: write paragraphs containing a topic sentence, supporting details, and a closing sentence
  • Voice: combine shorter sentences to eliminate redundancy and increase interest
  • Word Choice: avoid "tired words" to include more interesting words; increase interest by using dialogue; use transition words and phrases
  • Sentence Fluency: write complete sentences; create sentence variety through varied length and word order; combine shorter sentences to eliminate redundancy
  • Mechanics: use correct punctuation, capitalization, and grammar;
  • Presentation: write neatly or type; format writing appropriately

We use the Zaner-Bloser spelling program. Each week, we will work on a new unit of about 20 spelling words. Tests will typically be scheduled on Friday. After tests, the students will receive new lists to store in their agendas and practice at home. Students are encouraged to review their words each night.
