“The ACCESS test” is an English language proficiency test that is required for all students identified as ELL, whether in the ESL program or not. This test provides essential information about the progress of students and determines eligibility for the ESL program.

Parents can use the following questions to obtain more information about their child’s testing experience:


How will my child take the test?

  • Grades 1-8: Online Testing on a student Chromebook.

    • Masks will be optional

    • All equipment will be sanitized before use

      • Headphones with a microphone will be used for listening & speaking

      • Grades 4-8 will take all parts of the test on computer

      • Grades 1-3 will take Listening, Reading, Speaking sections on the computer

        • Writing will be pencil and paper

  • Kindergarten will take a paper and pencil test with the Test Administrator

    • masks will be optional

Who will give my child ACCESS for ELLs 2.0?

  • The Test Administrator is the ESL teacher, or an ACCESS for ELLs certified Test Administrator

Where will my child take the test?

  • All testing will take place in the ESL classroom or in the computer lab.

Did someone from the school explain the test to my son/daughter?

  • Yes.  ESL students will work on some sample questions to get comfortable with the format of the test before testing.

Are all of my child’s teachers aware that he/she is taking the test?

  • All teachers will be notified when the dates of testing are confirmed.

When and how will the scores be shared with me?

  • Results typically arrive during the summer and are processed at the beginning of the new school year.  A parent report is then shared via postal mail or uploaded to Genesis Parent Portal.
