Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Why do students need to read at home? Don't you already read in class and assign lots of homework?
Answer: If you take a look at the research on reading, you'll find overwhelming evidence that independent, sustained reading is the most effective way to improve reading ability. Yes, we do lots of reading in school, but not nearly enough time is available to devote to sustained silent reading. Twenty minutes a night (or more!) will make a significant difference, since it yields over over 100 hours of additional reading time by year's end.
